Caulfield: “During 1795 there were scarlet fever deaths in at least sixteen Massachusetts towns. The Boston epidemic began in the spring. At least seventeen died in Beverly, and eleven in Topsfield. In Sterling between March 1, 1795, and April 18, 1796, there were 8 deaths out of 150 cases, or a case fatality rate of 5.3 percent.” (“Some Common Diseases of Colonial Children.” Transactions of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, Vol. 35, April 1942, pp. 35-36.)

[1] The tally comes to 38-39, however, as can be seen, Caulfield notes the existence of scarlet fever in eleven localities, for which we find no specific numbers. We use the at least sign (>) to note the probability of additional deaths in one or more of these localities.
