Narrative Information
Mireles: “At 1500 MWT, a Consolidated B-24D crashed ten miles north of the Army Air Base at Alamogordo, New Mexico, killing 11 crewmembers and injuring radio operator SSgt. Richard Pugh, who parachuted to safety. The Accident Classification Committee stated,
Pilot was flying in the No. 4 position in a formation of four airplanes when the leader of the flight flew into a cloud. The pilot of the [subject] airplane became confused, attempted to slow the airplane down through throttling the engines, went into a spin or tight spiral from which he was unable to recover for some time; then in the recovery process the airplane had attained such a speed that abnormal stresses were [imposed], resulting in the loss of the left wing tip, rudder and elevator surfaces, resulting in total destruction of the aircraft.” (Mireles 2006, Vol. 1., p. 243.)
