“11/12/1947

“The dragger Margee & Pat was fishing on Georges Bank shortly before the gale of November 12, 1947. When she failed to return to New Bedford, the Coast Guard began a search, assisted by Army and Navy planes. The search continued until November 20, but no trace of the vessel was found.

“In February 1949, a hulk was seen drifting about 100 miles east of Boston. It was thought to be either the Margee & Pat or her sister ship, the Belle, which disappeared January 9, 1949, with seventeen men aboard.”

Newspapers

Nov 20, AP: “Boston (AP) – The waterfront gave up hope today for the New Bedford dragger Margee and Pat after the coast guard abandoned search for the vessel last reported on Georges Banks shortly before the gale of Nov 12. Waterfront men said they were ‘virtually certain’ the 85-foot vessel, commanded by Captain Olaf Thorlund, foundered with her crew of nine. The coast guard abandoned a three-day search after army, navy and coast guard planes criss-crossed the entire area where the dragger had been operating. The dragger was due in port last Sunday.” (AP. “Fishing Boat, 10 Men Are Given Up as Lost.” Berkshire Evening Eagle, MA. 11-20-1947, p. 2.)

Nov 20, UP: “Boston, Nov. 20 (UP) – The Coast Guard said today it had abandoned search for the New Bedford fishing dragger Margee & Pat which disappeared more than a week ago with a crew of nine aboard [Lost Vessels names 10 men aboard]. Coast Guard officials said planes had patrolled without finding a trace of the missing 85-foot vessel.

“Skippered by Capt. Olaf Thorland of New Bedford, the Margee & Pat set sail Nov. 6 with only a five-day supply of provisions. She last was seen Nov. 12 in an area off Cape Cod which shortly afterward was struck by a severe gale.

“The dragger was operated by the Standard Fish Co., of Boston, owners of the trawler Belle which disappeared with 17 crewmen under similar circumstances last January.”
