Newspaper

July 10, AP: “Stavanger, Norway (AP) – A U.S. military plane and a Norwegian Thunderjet fighter collided today over Sola Air Field, just outside Stavanger. A spokesman of the Stavanger police said 10 Americans were reported missing.

“The Thunderjet and the American plane – a DC-3 – were just getting into the landing pattern over the field when they tangled. The right wing of the DC-3 was ripped off by the impact and spiraled to earth a mile and a half from the airport. All aboard were reported killed.

“The Norwegian fighter went down like a rocket and exploded nearby. The sole occupant, a Norwegian flight lieutenant, perished….

“American officers from Sola reached the scene quickly and claimed a blackout on news about the crash. They declined to say where the plane was from but it was believed to be from a British base….” (Associated Press. “10 Americans Reported Lost in Plane Crash.” Oshkosh Daily Northwestern, WI. 7-10-1953, p.1.)
