Jan 21: “Ashland, Maine (UPI) – Six children — all members of one family — perished in a house fire here early yesterday. The children ranged in age from 2 years to 15. They were children of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Tripp who leaped out a second floor window to safety.  Dead are:

Carolyn Tripp, 2,        Jeanne, 9,

Barbara, 3,                  Ella, 12, and

Alfred, 4,                     Edna, 15.

“A roomer, Stanley Hinckley, was reported seriously injured as flames sped through the house in this northern Aroostook County town. He was hospitalized in poor condition at Presque Isle along with the parents of the Tripp children.  Ashland Fire Chief Burns McGowan said another occupant of the house, Glynn Cox, discovered the flash fire. McGowan said an 8-month-old baby, Rebecca also was in the house but was rescued.  An exploding stove was believed to have touched off the blaze.”  (Troy Record, NY. “Six Children Die in Fire.” 1-21-1959, p. 3.)
