Narrative Information

Ludlum: “Nine tobacco workers, aged 13 to 70, were struck while taking shelter in a tobacco barn 3 mi…south of Clinton in Sampson County, North Carolina. Lightning apparently struck metal heating system against which victims were leaning. Only one survived. Three other workers under open shelter outside the building were unhurt.” (Ludlum. Weather Bureau. Storm Data: “Sampson County, 3 mi. south of Clinton…12 [July]…1:30 pm…8 [killed]…Electrical. Nine tobacco workers, aged 13 to 70, struck while taking shelter in tobacco barn from thunderstorm. Lightning apparently struck metal heating system against which victims were leaning.
