Narrative Information

 

June 18:  “Lovelock, Nev. (AP) – Five persons were killed in a grinding high speed two-car collision Saturday [June 17] at 3 a.m. east of Lovelock on U. S. Highway 40.  Two were injured critically.  Killed immediately were Robert E. Cecil, 52, and Sue J. Cecil, 50, of Boise, Idaho. Evelyn B. Fuller of Lodi, Calif., and Gloria Ann Hardesty, 6, of Elk Grove, Calif., were tentatively identified among the dead.

 

“Cecil was a Boise insurance executive. A 44-year-old woman, Barbara M. Hardesty of Elk Grove, died in an ambulance en route to a Reno hospital. Clifford R. Hardesty, 18, and Garnet V. Hardesty, 45, of Elk Grove, are in critical condition in a Reno hospital.  Identification took over 12 hours by Nevada Highway Patrolmen and Pershing County sheriff’s deputies, who worked together in the investigation.”  (Ogden Standard-Examiner, UT. “Wreck Kills 5 in Nevada.” 6-18-1961, p. 1.)

 

July 1:  “An automobile accident near Lovelock two weeks ago claimed a sixth victim Friday night [June 30] with the death of Garnett V. Hardesty of Lodi, Calif. Mr. Hardesty, driver of a car that crashed head-on with an automobile driven by a Boise, Idaho, man died in Washoe Medical Center just before midnight. Hardesty’s wife, Barbara Ann, and a daughter, Gloria Ann, died in the crash.  Two sons, Clifford, who was released from Washoe Medical Center today, and Richard, of Lode, survive.  Mr. Hardesty, who was born Nov. 19, 1915, in Indiana, was employed as an automobile repairman…”  (Reno Evening Gazette, NV. “Crash Claims Sixth Victim.” 7-1-1961, p. 1.)
