Feb 24: “By United Press International. Winter smacked the northland from coast to coast with snow and freezing rain today…Heavy snow warnings shot up from northern Ohio to western New York as the storm that dumped up to 7 inches of the white stuff on the Midwest moved eastward toward New England. Bradford, Pa., was blanketed with 7 inches of snow during the night, while 5 inches fell on South Bend, Ind., Cleveland and Akron, Ohio, and Olean, N.Y. To the south of the snowy belt Friday night [23rd], heavy rains soaked parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia….” (UPI. “Storm Pounds North States, Blocks Roads.” Cumberland Evening Times, MD, 2-24-1962, p. 1.)

 

Feb 25: “A new storm dumped up to a foot of snow from North Dakota to New York Saturday [Feb 24], with towering drifts clogging traffic and hitting some areas with the worst weather of the winter. Drifts piled six feet high in western New York. Four inches of ne snow fell on southeastern North Dakota and the mercury dropped to 23 below at Beach and Parshall, N.D. The greater Buffalo, N.Y., International Airport was closed for 10 hours. Crews worked to open the Rochester, N.H. airport….

 

“Three deaths were lamed on the weather in Indiana, which was struck by a major winter storm for the third year in a row during the same three day February period…

 

“The wind-driven snow blocked roads and pulled down power lines. The Detroit Dept. of Public Works used up the last of its $700,000 appropriation for snow removal as the storm swept the city.

 

“Heavy snow warnings of four to eight inches were up in most of New Hampshire and Maine. Weathermen posted hazardous driving warnings for parts of Vermont, Massachusetts and New York State….The temperature went to 19 below zero at Cutback and Havre, Mont., and was below zero in the midlands as far south as western Nebraska….Michigan snow depth ranged to eight inches in Detroit suburbs and was a record-breaking 8.3 inches at Windsor, Ont., just across the river. Northeast Ohio measured seven inches of snow and three-foot drifts which closed roads in at least 5 spots.
