Newspaper
Sep 23, Associated Press: “Dover, Del. (AP)—A massive air-search was underway in the Atlantic Sunday night for an Azores-bound Military Air Transport Service plane reported by the Coast Guard “missing and probably down at sea.” Ten crewmen were aboard the four-engine C133 turboprop Cargomaster when it left Dover Air Force Base at 1:35 a.m., EST, on a 2,280-mile flight to Jajes Air Station on the island of Terceira. A Coast Guard spokesman said 12 search planes from the coast guard, navy and air force were concentrated in a criss-cross operation up to 480 miles east of Cape May, N.J., in a corridor 60 miles wide.
“A distress situation was declared at 5:40 a.m. after the big plane failed to radio a new position report. The last radio word received from the plane was at 1:53 a.m., when it was 30 miles southeast of Cape May, N.J. It should have arrived in Lajes at 9:35 a.m. It carried enough fuel to keep it airborne until 1 p.m. Three Coast Guard cutters also joined in the search. The Coast Guard also alerted approximately 100 ships within 30 miles of the plane’s scheduled route to be on the lookout.
“All 10 men aboard the plane were members of the First Air Transport Squadron at Dover.” (Oneonta Star (NY). “Massive Search on For Plane,” Sep 23, 1963, p. 1.)
