Jan 22, AP: “Athens, Greece (AP) – A U.S. Air Force plane with 10 persons aboard crashed near Kalavrita in the northern Peloponnesus early today, a U.S. Embassy spokesman said. All aboard were believed to have perished, the spokesman said. The plane, a C124 Globemaster, was en route from Aviano Air Base, in northeast Italy, to Athens when it crashed 160 miles southwest of the Greek capital.
“The plane belonged to the 1507th Air Transport Wing based at Dover, Del., the spokesman said. He reported that authorities at Kalavrita sent Greek army units to the scene but there were no reports of survivors. “Athens, Greece – A rescue team Friday night found the charred bodies of 10 persons near the wreckage of a United States military transport plane that crashed into the top of Mount Helmos, 100 miles west of here, early Friday morning. Reports from Patras, in southern Greece, said most of the men on the plane, a C124 Globemaster, were believed burned beyond recognition and that only parts of their bodies were found scattered among the debris. The Globemaster was heading for Athens with a shipment of mail.
