Associated Press: “Seaside, Ore. (AP) – An early morning highway crash snuffed out the lives of
eight teen-agers and adults, and seriously injured seven young children today. State police said it
was a head-on crash between a station wagon, carrying two adults and the children, and a passenger
car carrying youths in their late teens and early 20s. Hours after the crash some of the victims still

May 2: “Portland (AP) – Seven children injured in the Saturday crash that claimed eight lives on
U.S. 26 near Elsie, Ore. Were in ‘improved’ condition Sunday night. Four were in Portland’s
Emmanuel Hospital and the other three were in the Seaside Community Hospital.

“In serious but improved condition in Portland were David Butler, 11, Michael Anderson, 13,
Dennis Anderson 11, and Mark Anderson, 14 months. In satisfactory condition at Seaside were
May Anderson, 11, Maureen Anderson, 9, and Anna Butler, 13.

“The Butler children whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. N. W. Butler of Gearhart, Ore., were riding
in a station wagon with the Andersons. Earl Henry Anderson Jr., 53, and his wife, Shirley, 37, Vernonia, Ore., were killed.

“Six young people riding in the other automobile were killed. They were Lynda Kay Wildt, 18,
Walter Dennis Hershey Jr., 23, Joseph Ray Pynes, 23, Vee Ann Yarbrough, 19, and Beverly Jean
Roberts, 19, all of Portland, and Robert Charles Sanders, 23, of Camas, Wash.” (AP (Associated
