Narrative Information

Dec 28: “Panton, Vt. (UPI) – A sleeping family of six including three children perished in a farmhouse fire early today. Dead are Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Warren Sr., their children Frances, 17, Gerald Jr., 16, and a year-old baby, and Warren’s mother.

“William Steir Jr., 19, of Syracuse, N.Y., a boyfriend of Frances who was visiting for the Christmas holiday, attempted to rouse the family but failed. Steir smashed a window to escape and raced half a mile in pajamas and stocking feet over snow to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hutchins. Steir collapsed in shock. He was hospitalized with cuts on both hands.

“The Warrens moved to this tiny central Vermont community of 300 near Lake Champlain last April from Syracuse….The Warrens had rented the two-story wooden farmhouse which police said was owned by Robert Redpath Jr. who lives in New Jersey.” (United Press International “Family Perishes In Fire.” Bennington Banner, VT. 12-28-1966, p. 1.)
