Narrative Information

National Fire Protection Association: “Faulty lights on a Christmas tree are believed re-sponsible for a fire that killed 10 people in a two-family tenement in Brooklyn, New York, on December 18. The fire, which apparently started in the second story, was discovered by a passing patrolman when he saw flames coming from the 2g.-story frame building. At least 27 people were sleeping in the house, but the police could alert and evacuate only nine before the fire drove them back. Fire fighters were able to rescue some of the others, but most of the victims were trapped in an attic sleeping area, which had only a four-foot ceiling.” (NFPA. “The Major Fires of 1969,” Fire Journal, Vol. 64, No. 3, May 1970, p. 38.)
