Dec 13, AP: “Manila (AP) – A U.S. Navy plane carrying 10 persons on a flight from the Philippines to Saigon was feared to have crashed in the South China Sea, a Navy spokesman said Monday. Debris and mailbags were spotted about 200 miles southwest of Subic U.S. Naval base north of Manila, the American aircraft carrier Coral Sea reported. No survivors were reported. The carrier, other ships and aircraft of the U.S. Air Force joint rescue command center at Clark Air Base continued to search. The spokesman said the Grumman C2 Greyhound turbo-prop plane, with six passengers and a crew of four, left the Naval Air Station at Cubi Point, next to Subic about 8:45 a.m. Sunday for South Vietnam, but failed to arrive. All persons aboard were Americans and the plane was on a routine passenger flight, the spokesman said. The aircraft was assigned to the Fleet Tactical Support Squadron, 50 Detachment. Names of the missing were not immediately available.” (AP. “Ten Americans Are Feared Lost With Navy Plane.” Amarillo Daily News, TX. 12-13-1971, p. 10.)
