Narrative Information

Oct 12: “Cedar Grove (AP) – Nearly 40 cars and trucks crashed Friday on a foggy Interstate 43 in eastern Wisconsin, killing 10 people and injuring three dozen others during the busy morning commute in what officials said was the deadliest traffic accident in state history.

“Rescuers confirmed 10 people died, and they did not anticipate finding any other victims as they removed burned, tangled wreckage from the scene, State Patrol Lt. Nick Scorcio said Friday evening.

“The previous record for fatalities in a single accident was nine on May 30,1937, in Manitowoc County, Scorcio said.

“Sheboygan County Sheriff Loni Koenig said, “I would just say that in my 21 years, it’s the most horrific scene I have ever seen”.…”  (Wisconsin State Journal, Madison. “A foggy, deadly morning.” 10-12-2002, p. 1.)

shell-shocked,” said Todd Behling, whose brother Eric died in Friday morning’s rush hour crash on Interstate 43 near Cedar Grove. Behling said the Sheboygan County Sheriffs Department notified the family Friday night of Eric’s death.  Behling, 38, drove the freeway from Oostburg to his job in Saukville, where he maintained a roofing company’s fleet of vehicles, his brother said….

“Authorities identified the other victims as:

Daniel J. Balint, 52, and

William T. Balint, 26, a father and son from Oostburg;

Nadine M. Boltz, 49, Kewaunee;

Richard B. Doll, 25, Cedar Grove;
