NWS WFO Norman, OK: “Thunderstorms developed early in the afternoon of February 10, 2009 from near the Lawton area, northeast toward the Oklahoma metro area. Thunderstorms became severe relatively quickly as they moved through Caddo and Grady counties, and began to show signs of rotation as they moved toward western Oklahoma City. One supercell thunderstorm spawned several tornadoes as it moved northeast through central Oklahoma. Sporadic damage was reported along the storm’s path, with some of the damage being significant as the supercell moved through northern Oklahoma county and southern Logan county. Other supercells developed near the same areas of Caddo and Grady Counties and also moved northeast. Some locations received several rounds of very large hail through the afternoon.

 

“Later in the afternoon of February 9th, a second area of thunderstorms developed over northern Texas. Several supercell thunderstorms developed and moved northeast toward the Red River. One supercell thunderstorm moved northeast over Clay county and northwest Montague County. A tornado developed as it moved into Jefferson county near the Red River and continued northeast through western Love County and into Carter County. Significant damage was reported in and around the Lone Grove area and over the far north sides of Ardmore. There were 8 fatalities in and around Lone Grove. The tornado crossed U.S. Interstate Highway 35 and eventually crossed into southern Murray County. Fox News:  “At least eight people are confirmed dead and more than a dozen injured in Oklahoma after a violent tornado ripped through a town in the southern part of the state…. The twister tore a half-mile swath through the town of Lone Grove shortly before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, state officials said….

 

“The tornado in Lone Grove, about 100 miles south of Oklahoma City, was one of several unusual February twisters that touched down in the state. Others struck the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, where homes and businesses were damaged but only three minor injuries were reported. Six homes were destroyed near the suburb of Edmond, where a car mechanic shop and the vehicles inside were twisted into a ball of metal….

 

“There were unconfirmed reports the death toll go higher, but Robert Deaton, interim chief investigator for state Medical Examiner’s office, said Tuesday morning that there were eight confirmed dead, seven from Lone Grove, and a truck driver from Jones, Okla., who was driving through the area at the time of the tornado. Ed Reed, the county emergency manager, also said the official death toll stood at eight….

 

“In northwest Oklahoma City, the twister apparently developed near Wiley Post Airport and headed northeast, damaging shopping centers, restaurants and an apartment complex. Signs were stripped, and cars were damaged….

 

“In the area of the fatal tornado, one house was damaged in the town of Wilson, officials said. In Logan County, 20 homes were damaged near Henney, east of Guthrie.
