March 10: “Gray, Ky. — Gino Cima raced to a house as it was engulfed by flames in rural Kentucky, frantically trying to save his nephew, his nephew’s pregnant fiancée and five young children inside. But he was too late: He found his nephew’s body near a side door, laying in a way that suggested the man had been trying to rescue the sleeping children. Before coming upon his nephew’s body and that of the man’s fiancée, he said he screamed to firefighters: “There’s babies in that house!” Cima said Sunday that he arrived within minutes of hearing of the Saturday morning blaze. “When I opened the screen door, she was laying at the door with her head to the door. And I pulled her out,” he said, speaking softly. “And about 2 feet from her laying the other way was (my nephew). And I went in and got him and pulled him out. But they was done gone. There wasn’t nothing I could do.” He said he then raced to the front of the house to try to save the children. “And that’s when they had the five babies laying out in the front yard,” he said…. family members said the five children killed ranged in age from 10 months to 3 years.
“Relatives said the nephew’s fiancée was the mother of three of the children who died. The other two children were siblings and friends of the family, visiting for the night for a sleepover, the relatives said.
“Officials said the cause of the fire was under investigation. Arson investigators were at the scene Saturday, but officials said no foul play was suspected. State police said Sunday that no more information on the fire would be released until Monday….”
March 12: “Louisville, Ky. (AP) — An engaged couple and five children killed in a weekend house fire in southern Kentucky died from smoke inhalation, investigators said Tuesday as they worked to determine the cause of the blaze. Trooper Shane Jacobs said those who died in the blaze Saturday in the community of Gray were 27-year-old Jesse Disney; his fiancée, 22-year-old Nina Asher; her three children, 3-year-old William Gray Jr., 2-year-old Camden Gray and 8-month-old Abigail Gray; and family friends who were staying over, 2-year-old Paiten Cox and 2-year-old Brielle Cox.
“Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire and have said it could take some time before the cause is determined. Jacobs said autopsies were done Monday and that neither arson nor foul play were suspected.
“The blaze shook the rural community of Gray in the foothills of Appalachia near the Daniel Boone National Forest and the Tennessee and Virginia state lines….” (Barrouquere, Bret. “Police: Smoke Inhalation Killed 7 in KY. Fire.” AP, 3-12-2013.)
March 28: “Louisville, Ky. — A fire that killed two adults and five children this month in southern Kentucky burned so hot they are unable to determine its cause, investigators told The Associated Press on Wednesday. State Fire Marshal spokesman Dick Brown and Kentucky State Trooper Shane Jacobs said arson investigators weren’t able to find the exact cause of the March 9 fire and, because of extreme damage to the house, are unlikely to come to a final determination. Brown said, however, that the fire was accidental and investigators had ruled out arson and foul play. Brown said State Police and Fire Marshal investigators found no evidence that would suggest arson.” (Barrouquere, Brett. “Cause of Kentucky fire that killed seven may remain unknown.” AP, 3-28-2013.)
