Narrative Information

AP, Jan 28: “Hagerstown, MD. — Last weekend’s crippling blizzard was the fourth most powerful snowstorm to hit the Northeast in at least 60 years, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Thursday. The agency gave the storm a rating of 7.66 on the Northeast Snowfall Impact Scale, which ranks storms according to inches of snowfall, geographic reach and population affected. That bumps down to No. 5 the Presidents Day weekend storm of 2003, which had a score of 7.50. The blizzard last Friday through Sunday affected 102.8 million people and covered about 434,000 square miles in 26 states, NOAA spokeswoman Maureen O’Leary said. Almost 24 million people saw more than 20 inches of snow and 1.5 million got more than 30 inches, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Kocin, who helped develop the scale. He called the storm a slightly smaller version of a January 1996 blizzard, No. 2 on the list, which covered a similar area….

“The storm dropped snow from Louisiana to Maine and across parts of the southern Midwest. It also caused damaging coastal flooding in New Jersey.

“At least 52 people in 11 states and the District of Columbia died in storm-related incidents including car accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning and heart attacks while shoveling snow.

“One of the highest snowfall readings was 42 inches, in Glengary, West Virginia, where some counties remained under states of emergency Thursday….

“The most powerful storm on the list is still the so-called Storm of the Century, which dropped more than 30 inches of snow in spots along a swath from Mississippi to Maine in March 1993. That ferocious late-winter blast, characterized by NOAA as a superstorm, scored 13.2 on the scale. It affected more than 100 million people and caused more than $2 billion in property damage in 22 states, according to NOAA’s website….”(Associated Press. “Winter Storm Jonas ranks 4th worst among Northeast snowstorms.” New York Post, 1-28-2016.)

[1] The range of involves inclusion of the death of a 8-month unborn girl when mother died after shoveling snow. We include in that the baby might well have been born safely if not for the snow shoveling-related death of the mother.

[2] This tally, however, includes the Jan 17 death of a man in Reading, Mass., who was hit by a dump truck fitted for snow-plowing , several days prior to “Jonas,” and should not be included in the storm’s death toll in our opinion. We also note that the breakout of fatalities by State in the “Impact” section double counts the heart attack, snow-shoveling-related death of a U.S. Capitol Police officer – who died at his home in Delaware. The citation for the note of three DC deaths includes the Capitol Police officer, as does the source used for the Delaware death. In addition, this same source for three D.C. deaths includes the Fort Washington, Maryland snow shoveling-related death, also a double count, as this death is also included in the Maryland total.

[3] Does not include death of Saniyah Bonilla, 3, of NJ from CO poisoning. Notes her mother and brother died, while noting she remained hospitalized in critical condition. By the time of the publication of this AP article, however, it had been reported elsewhere that Saniyah had also died. Also does not include the (judgement call) death of 8-month old female fetus in PA after baby’s mother died due a pre-existing heart condition after shoveling snow (notes mother’s death). Does not include Arkansas traffic accident under sleeting conditions on Jan 21. Does not include USPS postal worker death in GA when a tree fell on his truck. Does not include East Greenwich Township and Hackensack, NJ, deaths. Has only five NY deaths, when it appears there were 8-9, with one source reporting 10. Thus if nine of these eleven deaths are included the toll would be 57.

[4] Does not include Arkansas Jan 21 traffic accident.
