Narrative Information
ABC News: “At least 16 people have died over the last 48 hours due to tornadoes, as a violent system of storms continues to work its way across the Florida Panhandle and parts Georgia and Alabama.
“At least 12 people died and around two dozen were injured in Georgia from tornadoes early Sunday morning, following four tornado-related deaths that occurred in Mississippi on Saturday morning….
“Michael Miller, coroner in Brooks County, Georgia, told ABC News that two deaths were confirmed in his county with five more fatalities in Cook County and four more in nearby Berrien County. At least 23 other people in the state are injured.
“In the area of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where at least four people died, a large tornado leveled homes and buildings, trapping residents in their homes, authorities said. Further north in Choctaw County, Mississippi, on Saturday at least four people were injured and at least 20 homes damaged from a possible tornado, according to the National Weather Service.” (ABC News/Hayden. “16 Dead Over 48 Hours as Tornadoes Wreck Havoc in the South.” 1-22-2017.)
AP, Jan 22: “Emergency responders rushed to answer new reports of deaths and injuries Sunday evening in southern Georgia as violent storms already blamed for killing 16 people in the Southeast continued to inflict destruction. An apparent tornado blew through a mobile home park early Sunday in southern Georgia’s rural Cook County — sheering off siding, upending homes and killing seven people, local authorities said. An eighth death was reported in Cook County by state officials, although it was unclear whether that victim lived in the park….” (AP. “The Latest: Georgia Officials: 14 Dead Statewide From Storms.” 1-22-2017, 7:32 pm.)
Jan 22, 7:30 PM EST, The Weather Channel: “Multiple fatalities were confirmed by a county coroner Sunday after a tornado tore through Albany, Georgia. The twister hit the city as an outbreak of severe storms battered the South. Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency for seven counties in the southern half of the state as the death toll jumped to 19. Albany County Commission Chairman Chris Cohilas confirmed to weather.com that there have been at least 3 deaths due to the storm.” (Weather Channel (Eric Chaney and Ada Carr). “Deaths and Injuries Reported Near Albany, Georgia, After Violent Tornado.” 1-22-2017, 7:30 PM EST.)
Jan 23, 5:45 AM EST, The Weather Channel: “An outbreak of tornadoes tore through parts of the Deep South from January 21-22, 2017. At least 19 deaths are being blamed on severe weather across the Deep South and Gulf Coast. From the morning of January 21 through January 22, 41 reports of tornadoes were received by NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center in five southern states from Louisiana to South Carolina….” (Weather Channel. “Over 40 Reports of Tornadoes in January 21-22, 2017 Outbreak, Including Hattiesburg, Mississippi, EF3 Tornado.” 1-23-2017, 5:45 AM EST.)
Jan 23, 12:30 PM EST, The Weather Channel: “….An enormous storm system kicked up more than two dozen tornadoes, shredded homes and left other destruction scattered around the Southeast has claimed at least 20 lives after a two-day assault on the region.
“Georgia’s latest deaths were confirmed Monday morning by Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler, who said a total of four people died in the county Sunday after the tornado hit Albany.
“Emergency officials in Columbia County, Florida, reported one person was killed when a large tree split a home in half in the Lake City area.
“The day’s deadliest toll came before daybreak Sunday when an apparent tornado blew through a mobile home park in south Georgia — about 60 miles southeast of Albany — shearing away siding, upending homes and killing seven people. Cook County Coroner Tim Purvis confirmed that seven people died at Sunshine Acres, where about roughly half of the 40 homes were “leveled.” Georgia state emergency officials initially reported an eighth death in that county but later said that was incorrect….” (Weather Channel. “Dozens of Tornadoes, Severe Storms Leave 20 Dead in South.” 1-23-2017, 12:30 PM EST.)
Jan 26, Weather Channel: “The Jan. 21-23, 2017 tornado outbreak was one of the largest outbreaks on record not only for January, but for any winter month, according to data from the National Weather Service. Over a roughly 48-hour period from the morning of Jan. 21 through Jan. 23, at least 62 tornadoes have been confirmed either by National Weather Service damage surveys in eight southern states from Texas and Arkansas to Florida to South Carolina.
“According to data from The Weather Channel severe weather expert, Dr. Greg Forbes, this latest outbreak spawned the second largest number of tornadoes for any January outbreak, topped only the January 21-22, 1999 outbreak. This latest outbreak is also the third largest on record for any winter month of December, January or February in reliable records dating to 1950. The infamous Super Tuesday 2008 outbreak also exceeded the count from the Jan. 2017 outbreak.
“This outbreak has now pushed the tornado count for January 2017 to 113, the second highest total for any January on record since 1950, and only the second time that count has topped 100, according to Forbes. January 1999 had an incredible 212 tornadoes. To put this in perspective, the 20-year average (1996-2015) U.S. tornado count in July is 112.
“At least 20 deaths are being blamed on severe weather across the Deep South and Gulf Coast. Sadly, the tornado death toll now tops the toll from all of 2016, and is the deadliest January for tornadoes in the U.S. since 1969.” (Weather Channel. “January 21-23, 2017 Tornado Outbreak One of Largest Winter Outbreaks on Record in U.S.” 1-26-2017.)
