1962 — Jan 7-14, Snow, coldwave, deaths in 29 States, esp. TX/>30, IL/MI/WI>16–153-212

-153-212 Blanchard tally based on reporting noted below.

We can attest to at least 153 fatalities based on specific deaths noted below, thus we use 153 as the low-end of the death-toll range we show. A tally of the highest number of deaths reported for each of the 29 States noted below comes to 219, which is seven more deaths than the highest number we have seen in news reporting at the time — the 212 reported on Jan 14 by the CA Modesto Bee citing Associated Press and United Press International reporting. We are reluctant to report more than was reported at the time, thus we choose to use 212 as the high-end of the death-toll range we show.

Narrative Information

Jan 8, UPI: “A bitter new storm piled into the west today with snows up to two feet deep, blizzard conditions, and numbing cold. The blast followed on the heels of a weekend storm which still had parts of the middle west paralyzed. Schools remained closed, traffic crawled through frozen slush, and transportation was still crippled throughout a vast midlands area.

“The weekend storm was blamed for at least 50 deaths across the nation’s eastern half. There were 15 weather deaths in both Illinois and Wisconsin. 9 in Michigan, 6 in Iowa, 3 in Massachusetts, and 1 each in Missouri and North Carolina.

“A killer storm which lashed Michigan for three days loosened its icy grip briefly today as weather officials warned of another impending assault. In its wake, the storm left clogged roads, snapped power lines, closed schools, at least four dead and scores injured….” (United Press Int.. “Heavy Snow Buries Region as Storm Batters Midwest.” Traverse City Record Eagle, MI. 1-8-1962, 1.)

Jan 9, UPI: “A massive blast of Arctic air surged through the midlands today, stirred up a near-blizzard in New York State, and froze parts of he southland. Schools in and near hundreds of communities were closed. Thousands of miles of roads were clogged by snow. Millions of persons were chilled by below zero temperatures. Forecasters said no relief was in sight.

“The Arctic blast penetrated through the entire central United States and brought freezing temperatures as far south as the central Gulf Area. The center of the high pressure area still was in Canada, leaving but one forecast for all the Midwest: More bitter cold.

“The storm in the Buffalo vicinity closed more than a dozen schools. There was as much as 14 inches of snow on the ground in western New York State, which followed two days of sleet and freezing rain, leaving roads a nightmare. The wind-blown snow reduced visibility to near zero in the Buffalo region. Local blizzard conditions for forecast for parts of Minnesota.

“There was nearly two inches of snow at Shreveport, La., and it was still falling. The temperature was 24. A hard freeze was predicted for all of Louisiana. Sleet and freezing rain were forecast for the northern half of Georgia, with lows ranging to 15.

“At Dallas, there was up to four inches of snow on the ground. Streets and highways were jammed by stalled cars, with 1,500 abandoned on one stretch between Dallas and Fort Worth. Five deaths were attributed to the Texas storm. Since the weekend, the United Press International has counted 71 weather-caused fatalities in 15 states. At least two died of exposure.

“Thermometers plunged below zero from Montana to Colorado and from the Dakotas into Illinois. In some mountain sections it was 30 below and it was 41 below at Butte, Mont. Snow fell from the Rockies into Oklahoma and Texas and eastward through the Mississippi Valley into northern reaches of the Gulf states. Where it was warmer there was freezing rain.

“Thousands of automobiles were stranded and completely covered by snow on Chicago streets. Public transportation facilities were jammed with commuters who left their cars behind. The temperature in Chicago during the morning rush hour was 5 below.

“Schools throughout Arkansas were closed.

“Meanwhile, San Francisco had a high of 79 degrees Monday, breaking a record for the date.” (UPI. “Massive Arctic storm strikes midlands.” Redlands Daily Facts. 1-9-1962, p. 1.)

Jan 10, UPI: “Most of the nation froze today in one of the bitterest cold waves of he century. Cold records were set in at least 12 cities ranging from Michigan to the top of Texas. The week’s toll of weather-blamed deaths climbed to 88. No real relief was in sight.

“A United Press International count of weather-related deaths since the start of the polar blast last weekend showed 19 in Illinois, 17 in Wisconsin, 9 in Michigan, 8 in Texas, 6 in both Colorado and Iowa, 3 each in Missouri, Montana, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, 2 each on New York, Ohio and Kansas, and 1 each in Alabama, North Carolina, Louisiana, Minnesota and Oklahoma.

“The cold wave covered 40 of the nation’s 50 states and its toll in terms of misery and property loss was incalculable.

“The coldest weather in 15 years knifed into the Texas Rio Grande Valley and threatened to destroy the area’s multi-million dollar citrus crop. Northern Florida agricultural areas were in for a hard freeze. To the north, vast pocket blizzards afflicted New York state and 10 to 18 inches of fresh snow walloped communities along the Lake Michigan shore in Michigan….” (United Press International. “Polar Blasts Blamed for 88 Deaths.” Bakersfield Californian. 1-10-1962, p. 1.)

Jan 11, AP: “Harsh cold covered almost the entire nation today. It blanketed all the country, except the peninsula of Florida and a strip along the Pacific Coast, with freezing temperatures. The mercury shrank below the zero level I at least 17 states. Snow fell in Pensacola in north-western Florida. Mobile, Ala., close to the Gulf of Mexico, felt the pinch of 8 above zero – the lowest for January there in records that cover 90 years. But the worst was over in sections that had been hit hardest. A rising trend began in the West and Midwest and little snow was reported.

“Cold and snow that began to spread across the country last week was a factor in more than 100 deaths. A late tally showed a total of 116. Included were 17 attributed to exposure, 66 in heart attacks suffered while shoveling snow or shoving automobiles and 33 in motor vehicle accidents on snowy or icy roads….” (Associated Press. “Over 100 Dead From Weather.” Decatur Daily, AL. 1-11-1962, p. 1.)

Jan 11, UPI: “A brutal winter storm and one of the bitterest cold waves of the century tortured two-thirds of the nation Wednesday. The great Arctic blast took a rising toll of lives, penetrated to the bones of millions of Americans and slowed the processes of everyday life from the Rockies to the Atlantic. Snowdrifts piled 14 feet high in Alabama. The mercury plunged to a killing 50 below in the western mountains. A snowstorm swept up the Atlantic seaboard. Great Lakes-spawned baby blizzards lashed upstate New York.

“Hundreds of thousands of school children were on cold wave vacations in at least 10 states from the northern Rockies to Georgia. Heating emergencies affected entire communities in Nebraska, Oklahoma and Alabama. Business shut down wholesale, particularly in hard hit Dixie.

“The bitter cold set records in smaller communities. It pushed the toll of weather-blamed fatalities since the vicious onslaught began last weekend to at least 95. A United Press International count showed 19 weather deaths in Illinois, 17 in Wisconsin, 9 in Michigan, 8 in Texas, 7 in Colorado, 6 in Iowa, 4 in Missouri, 3 each in Massachusetts, Montana and New Hampshire, 2 each in Alabama, Kansas, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma and South Carolina, and 1 each in Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and North Carolina.

“Weathermen said the Arctic blast would intensify before it let up in the Southland from Arizona to Florida, and in the East. Some moderations was promised for sections of West Texas, Arizona and New Mexico….

“The mercury slumped to 53 below zero at Fraser, Colo., and 52 below at Leadville, Colo….” (UPI. “Brutal Storm Grips Two-Thirds of Nation.” Times Democrat, Cullman, AL. 1-11-1962, 1.)

Jan 12, UPI: “Bitter cold that gripped practically all the nation hung on today with record low temperatures and deep snow dipping into Dixie. But forecasters said relief was on the way for the Midwest, which has staggered under one of the longest cold spells in years. The forecast was for a gradual warming.

“The mercury stood at 12 degrees at Pensacola, Fla., lowest since Weather Bureau instruments were installed at the present location 21 years ago….At Mobile, Ala., it was 8 above zero, the lowest for any January day there on record. It was 7 below in western Virginia, with as much as nine inches of snow on the ground. Residents of Richmond, Va., trudged to work in temperatures only 4 degrees above zero.

“There have been 137 weather-attributed deaths since last weekend, Illinois leading the list with 25….” (Appeal-Democrat, Marysville-Yuba City, CA. “Snow, Record Cold For Dixie.” 1-11-1962, p. 1.)
