May 30, AP: “Selma, Ala., May 30. – (AP) – Five persons were killed in a head-on collision of two automobiles on a dusty country road near here today. A soldier’s wife and her two small sons were killed in a private car. Two occupants of a taxi were fatally injured and three others less severely hurt.” (Oakland Tribune, CA. “Five Killed When Autos Collide.” 5-30-1953, p. 2.)

May 31, AP: “….The Selma tragedy cost the lives of Mrs. Mamie Troha Sewell, 21, James Boyd Sewell, 3½, and Billy Sewell, 1½, all in the family car; and James Mitchell, 30, and Willie A. Watson, 29, both Selma Negroes, riding in a taxi. Three other Negroes in the taxi were injured, but are expected to live.

“Highway Patrolman M. G. Rush said Mrs. Sewell, passed an approaching car and collided head-on with the taxi, which was following closely behind the other vehicle. The crash occurred in a cloud of dust on an unpaved rural road.
