Narrative Information

Lednicer: “24 February 1947 A US Air Force B-29 Superfortress, of the 28th BS disappeared, over the Bering Sea. The crew of twelve were presumed dead.” (Lednicer. “Intrusions, Overflights, Shootdowns and Defections…Cold War…” 4-16-2011.)

Liefer: “On February 24, 1947, a weather reconnaissance B-29-95-BW assigned to the 717th Bomb Squadron/28th Bomb Group (VH) of Alaska Air Command at Elmendorf Air Force Base, vanished while on a routine reconnaissance flight. Operated by Captain Raymond Tutton and a twelve-man crew, the B-29 was flying a set course over the Bering Sea and western coast of Alaska before returning to Elmendorf AFB. Radio transmissions and possible sightings indicated the aircraft likely crashed somewhere in interior of Alaska, but no evidence of the B-29 or its crew has ever been found.”
