Jan 13, AP: “Birmingham, Jan. 13. (AP) – A tornado which dipped into five counties in west and central Alabama and Mississippi last night brought death to 11 persons, 10 of them Negroes, injured more than 150 others and wrought untold property damage. The greatest loss of life was reported at Moundville, Ala., where nine Negroes were killed, more than a score of others hurt and 40 homes razed by a wind which reached a velocity of 70 miles an hour.
“Mrs. Frank Simmons was killed when a storm demolished her home at New Hamilton, Miss., and her 12-year-old daughter was critically injured. More than 125 persons were injured at New Hamilton, 45 of the injured being taken to an Aberdeen hospital….
“A Negro woman was killed near Faunsdale, Ala., about 6 p.m. yesterday, when a tornado struck near there. Fifty houses were demolished, 12 persons, mostly white, were injured, and much livestock was killed.
