July 18, Alton Evening Telegraph, IL: “Ten drowned in Chicago area in Lake Michigan and adjacent waters, six were attempting to rescue others in distress.” (Alton Evening Telegraph, IL. “News of the Night.” 7-18-1927, p. 2.)
July 18: “(By United Press). Chicago, July 18.[1] – Ten persons were drowned in Lake Michigan while attempting to escape from the weekend heat. In one instance a father was drowned attempting to save his 9-year-old son from death, while in another a boy died while attempting to rescue a younger brother. It was one of the largest lists of fatalities for one day in the history of the beaches.”
