[1] Out of US Census population of 23,191,876, and 323,026 deaths from all causes (p. 19). The 1850 Census was conducted June 1, 1849-June 1, 1850. We presume that all the heat deaths were during the Summer and Fall of 1849, and none during the Winter or Spring of 1850. This is borne out by looking at season columns for each state.
