Mansfield: “Propeller Perseverance was burned on Lake Ontario while en route to Oswego, and 14 lives were lost.” (Mansfield. Great Lakes Maritime History. 1899)

Detail : Bound Port Dalhousie for Oswego, she caught fire offshore during the night and in high seas. She burned to the waterline, a total loss. The fire apparently started around the stack casing. Survivors launched the only unburned boat and were rescued by the prop Enterprise which cruised about for some time looking for more survivors. Others were seen to have launched an improvised raft, but were never found in the dark. Owned by Welland Railway of St. Catharines. Master: Capt. John Fitzgibbons(d).” (Swayze, David D. Oct 8: “The propeller PERSEVERANCE, which was destroyed by fire off Pultneyville, on the morning of the 6th. inst., the particulars of which was given in the Tribune of yesterday morning, was a craft of 652 tons burden, old style, being built in 1864 at St. Catharines by L. Shickluna, rated A 2 at $40,000 and was the property of the Welland Canal Railroad Co., of St. Catharines.”
