General Narrative
Jan 15: “Oklahoma City (AP) — The ice storms that have been blamed for at least 19 deaths continued to lash much of the nation Sunday, as crews tried to restore power to hundreds of thousands and slick roads spawned accidents. Waves of freezing rain, sleet and snow since Friday [Jan 12] have caused at least 10 deaths in Oklahoma, six in Missouri, two in Texas and one in-New York.
“Seven adults were killed early Sunday [Jan 14] near Elk City, Okla., when the minivan they were in hit a slick spot on Interstate 40, crossed the median and hit a tractor-trailer, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
“Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt said about 300,000 households there remained without power on Sunday. About 350 National Guardsmen were going door to door checking on residents in the hardest-hit areas and were helping to clear slick roads of tree limbs and power lines. “We have what appears to be a three-wave storm,” he said. “We’re in the final wave of it.”
“Nearly 150,000 customers lacked power in Oklahoma, utilities reported.
“In Nebraska, which has been pummeled by winter storms in the past month, the weekend storm dropped even more snow, making roads treacherous.” (Bluefield Daily Telegraph, WV. “Crews struggle to restore power amid ice.” 1-15-07, A3.)
Jan 16: “Rochester, N.Y. (AP) – A storm blamed for at least 39 deaths in six states spread into the Northeast on Monday, coating trees, power lines and roads with a shell of ice up to a half-inch thick and knocking out power to more than half a million homes and businesses. Ice-covered roads cut into Martin Luther King Jr. holiday observances from Albany, N.Y, to Fort Worth and Austin, Texas, where officials also canceled Gov. Rick Perry’s inauguration parade on Tuesday because another round of ice was expected during the night.
“The weight of the ice snapped tree limbs and took down power lines, knocking out electricity to
about 135,000 customers in New York state and New Hampshire. Even in Maine, a state well-accustomed to winter weather, a layer of sleet and snow on roads shut down businesses, day care centers and schools.
“In hard-hit Missouri, the utility company Ameren said it would probably not have everyone’s lights back on until Wednesday night.” (Bluefield Daily Telegraph, WV. “Deadly winter storm wrecks havoc in Northeast..” 1-16-2007, A8.)
Jan 25, Oklahoman: “Jan. 12-15, 2007: This storm caused catastrophic damage to the power systems in the eastern one-third Oklahoma, where ice accumulations were more than three inches in localized areas. Thirty-two deaths were linked to this storm: 19 perished in traffic accidents, eight succumbed to hypothermia, and three died due to accidental falls on the ice. Points northwest avoided widespread damage since most of the precipitation fell as snow and sleet. An arctic cold front moved into northeastern Oklahoma during the late evening hours of the 11th and had finally passed through the southeastern portion of the state by the evening of the 12th. A strong upper level low pressure system moved into the southern Rockies and several disturbances translated across the Southern Plains bringing periods of heavy sleet and freezing rain to the region. The initial precipitation began around daybreak on the 12th and the final round occurred on the 14th. A devastating swath of one to three inch ice amounts fell in an estimated 60 to 80 mile wide band from roughly Atoka to McAlester to Muskogee to Grove. An estimated 120,000 electric customers were without power due to downed power poles and power lines within this swath, some of which were without power for more than two weeks. A total of 15,000 customers from McAlester alone lost power.” (Oklahoman, Oklahoma City. “Oklahoma ice storms, 2000-2007.” 1-25-2009.)
Oklahoma
AP: “Elk City, Okla. — A minivan carrying 12 people skidded off an icy highway early Sunday and slammed into an oncoming tractor-trailer, killing seven, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said. The eastbound van slid through the center median and struck a westbound tractor-trailer on Interstate 40 around 3:50 a.m., trooper Kera Philippi said. Five of the van’s occupants were taken to a hospital, Philippi said. Their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, a hospital spokes-man said.
“The identities of the woman and six men who were killed were not immediately released. Philippi said all the van’s occupants were adult residents of Mexico, and interpreters were being used to locate next of kin. All seven victims were thrown or partially thrown from the minivan and apparently were not wearing seat belts, trooper Chris Laufer said. They were pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
“At the time of the crash, about 110 miles west of Oklahoma City, freezing rain was falling and visibility was limited, according to the National Weather Service. A powerful winter storm had coated roads and highways with ice and sleet.” (AP. “Seven from Mexico killed in Oklahoma crash.” Brownsville Herald, TX, 1-15-2007, A6.)
